Required Training



Referees are required to complete registration, general AYSO certifications as well as referee-specific training:


1. register at ayso109.org
2. Sterling Volunteers background check
3. Safe Haven
4. Concussion Awareness
5. Sudden Cardiac Arrest
6. LiveScan fingerprinting
7. Safesport
8. Referee specific training

The detailed flow for a new volunteer:

1. register or sign in at ayso109.org (Sportsconnect) as a primary account holder
  • If you're not previously registered follow the instructions to create a login and then "Register Myself" as a Volunteer
    • Use your legal first and last name
    • There's no need for Additional Account Holder Information if you're not sharing your account with someone
2. If not already done, sign up to volunteer for the specific role/season
  • example, "Fall Core 2022"
    • Then select which divisions your child is in (if a youth referee, select any division)
  • Click on "View Selected Opportunities" then Select Role
    • After selection say "Sign up [your first name]" then Continue
  • NOTE: your Contact Information is then shown again.  Make SURE that you are using your LEGAL first and last name that matches your ID.  If you didn't enter your legal names at the beginning, you may edit that here.  
  • View and accept the following (by clicking on box and entering LEGAL first and last name for each):
    • AYSO Kids Zone Pledge
    • WAIVER, CONSENT, RELEASE, DISCLAIMER AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK AGREEMENT
      • Note this triggers an email from [email protected]sterlingvolunteers.com (although it says American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO)
        • If you can't find it, check your SPAM folder
      • Follow the instructions in that email to continue the background check
    • COVID-19 Assumption of Risk, Waiver and Release of Liability Agreement
    • The Training Items listed with a "+" are things we'll go over next, so you can Continue
3. complete all AYSOU Training
  • ayso109.org > VOLUNTEER tab > AYSOU button below your name > Training Library
a. AYSO's Safe Haven - Online (under Safe Haven courses)
b. CDC Concussion Awareness - Online (under Safe Haven courses)
c. Sudden Cardiac Arrest - Online (under Safe Haven courses)

4a. For U10 and U12 Referees : 

* Complete the "AYSO Summary of the Laws of the Game" online at AYSOU
* Complete the full online part of the "  Regional Referee - Online + In-Person Companion Course - 2 Part Bundle"
* Enroll in and attend the "Basic Online Companion Course for 10U and Above Referees" on Sept 6th, Region 109 in person (via zoom).  If you can't make this, you can look for other companion course offerings around the area.

4b - For U7 and U8 Referees

* Complete the "AYSO Summary of the Laws of the Game" online at AYSOU
* Complete the "Official Course Online" - on AYSOU
* Attend the Menlo Park U7/U8 Mandatory Referee Meeting on Sept 8 at 7pm via zoom 

5. complete CA Mandated Fingerprinting (LiveScan instructions)
6. complete SafeSport (90min online - SafeSport instructions)
